Hi All. Happy Canada Day to all of you! To help celebrate our national holiday we wanted to share the rules for next years Resin Beast Painting Competition with you all. Additional details will be provided tomorrow, but we wanted to at least get the basics regarding entry to all of you.

What’s New in 2020:

The Resin Beast Painting Competition is back and even bigger in 2020. Most notably we are adding multiple new categories and modifying the subcategories. Entrants will now be able to submit their models into the Large, Diorama, or the Matriarch categories, and will be able to enter all three categories if they so choose! The Matriarch category is only intended to exist for 2020 and we expect it to be replaced by a Small model category in 2021 (yes we are already planning for 2021).

The Resin Beast Painting Competition will be held in the Creature Caster booth at Adepticon in March 2020. Stay tuned as we will provide additional dates and deadlines as we approach the convention

Be sure to read all the rules fully, as there are many changes. Please read size restrictions carefully.

Entry Rules for Resin Beast Large Category:

We consider this to be the premier painting category for the Resin Beast Competition. Focus is on large models that have been assembled and painted to the highest possible standard.

  1. Specifications of the entry:
    1. Single figure only.
    2. Intended for large scale figures. Including but not limited to Demonic Lords and Ladies, Demonic Kings and Queens, Dragons, Elementals.
    3. Maximum circular footprint of the entry is a 120mm diameter circle. Alternatively entries can be submitted on square footprint with a maximum size of 110mm x 110mm. Maximum height of the entry is 35 cm.
      1. If any part of the base, or scenic elements of the model, extend beyond the maximum dimensions then it may be refused entry or lose points in judging (plinths are included in these maximum dimensions). With the following exception:
      2. All parts of the entry should be modeled to remain within the maximum dimensions whenever possible. However, If a weapon/wing/or some extraneous elements of the original model extends beyond the footprint this will not be marked down or refused entry.
    4. Conversions are allowed however, no special consideration is given for conversion work. Each entry is judged on its own artistic and technical merits, which may be helped or hindered by conversion.

Entry Rules for A New Challenger Subcategory:

We want new challengers to appear each year to try and unseat our reigning champions, and this subcategory is there to encourage just that. All entries in the Resin Beast Large Category are automatically entered into New Challenger category if they are eligible. The highest score from eligible entries is the winner of the New Challenger Subcategory. Eligibility is determined by the following:

  1. You have not won a trophy in a prior Resin Beast Competition. (Jon, Sam, and Jonathan we are looking at you!)
  2. You are not eligible for a larger prize in the current Resin Beast Large Category.

Entry Rules for Resin Beast Matriarch Category:

Due to the limited selection of small Creature Caster models currently in circulation we decided to create a one off category for 2020 that focuses only on the Matriarchs. There is only one prize, judging is more casual, and we expect this category to be replaced in 2021 as we add additional models to the catalog.

  1. Specifications of the entry:
    1. Single figure only.
    2. Only Matriarch models permitted.
    3. Maximum circular footprint of the entry is a 60mm diameter circle. Alternatively entries can be submitted on square footprint with a maximum size of 60mm x 60mm. Maximum height of the entry is 15 cm.

Entry Rules for the Resin Beast Diorama Category:

The Diorama category emphasizes storytelling and thematic elements as strongly as technical and artistic aspects of the entry. There is no limit on the number of figures, however all figures included in an entry must fit within the maximum dimensions.

  1. Specifications of the entry:
    1. Creature Caster Models only.
    2. Maximum circular footprint of the entry is a 170mm diameter circle (226 square cm). Alternatively entries can be submitted on square footprint with a maximum of  size of 150mm x 150mm (225 square cm). Maximum height of the entry is 35 cm including any plinth or other forms of basing.
      1. Multiple models may be included in an entry, but the entire entry (regardless of the number of models) must fit within the maximum dimensions described above.
      2. If any part of the base, or scenic elements of the model, extend beyond the maximum dimensions then it may be refused entry or lose points in judging (plinths are included in these maximum dimensions). With the following exception:
      3. All parts of the entry should be modeled to remain within the maximum dimensions whenever possible. However, If a weapon/wing/or some extraneous elements of the original model extends beyond the footprint this will not be marked down or refused entry.
    3. Conversions are encouraged in this category, and are an important part of story telling. However, please note that while theme is the most important criterion when judging this category, technical and artistic merits are also assessed. These criteria require that the conversions not just look cool, but also be consistent and complementary to the original sculpt.
